Comedy comes in all different shapes and sizes. Different people find different things funny. Some people like live stand-up comedy. Others prefer sitcoms and funny movies. Still others like humorous books, like the work of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams.
At the Edinburgh festival, comedians and performers come from all over the world to test their skits, routines and bits. It’s the place where new comedians are discovered and new comedy actors are found.
The one thing you can’t do with comedy is examine it too much. The more you study a joke, the less funny it becomes.

stand-up
Definition: (adjective) delivering a comic monologue while standing alone on stage

sitcom
Definition: (noun) short for ‘situation comedy’, a funny radio or TV series with regular characters in funny situations.

Example Sentence: I love going to watch comedians at the Edinburgh Festival.
routine
Definition: (noun) a group of jokes on the same subject or a funny story that can be repeated.
Example Sentence: Penny has a side-splitting new routine where she tells a story about a gold miner.
bit
Definition: (noun) a short section of a comedy routine
Example Sentence: Joe did this hilarious bit about people pretending to be wolves
